Terrace design

Enjoying the fresh air - with a natural outdoor space

The small garden on the terrace holds undreamed-of possibilities - did you know, for example, that you can also build a pond, even if there is no natural ground? Nowadays, there are many ways to move the living space outside and turn the terrace into an atmospheric place. One of them is to plant bonsai trees

Terrasse Design Basel

Design from creativity and expertise

Designing a terrace requires creative talent and design skills.
Since space on terraces is often limited, it takes experienced designers to make the most of the limited space. A mistake in the design often only becomes apparent later, which can be difficult and expensive to correct. To be successful, it is important to divide the terrace into clearly defined zones and to determine the functions of each zone precisely.

There are 9 factors to be considered

    1. Positioning: consider whether you would rather spend early mornings (east), lunchtimes (south) or evenings (west) on your terrace.

    2. Try it out: Test how it feels to sit in the planned location before making final decisions.

    3. Privacy protection: consider whether your garden is visible to others and whether privacy protection is required.

    4. Windbreak and weather protection: consider the frequent wind direction and the direction from which summer storms come to provide adequate protection.

    5. Automatic watering: Roof terraces can get very hot in summer. Automatic irrigation helps keep plants healthy and attractive.

    6. Visual focal points: Consider which visual elements in your garden or on your terrace should be highlighted and plan for targeted lighting and/or illumination. Examples could be the path to the house, individual trees or a pond.

    7. Fire: A fireplace such as a open fire, fire bowl or barbecue can be the social centre of a terrace. Remember that wood supplies are needed to keep the fire going which can also be used as a design element.

    8. Planting: bonsai trees and shaped shrubs can add a lot of atmosphere to limited spaces such as roof terraces.

    9. Electrical planning: consider where you will need a power connection and lighting.
